Streets

Street Department

The Melrose Street Department maintains nearly 3 ¾ miles of roads within the Village limits. Village employees perform maintenance on roads during the Summer months and plow snow during the Winter months.

Street Lights and Signs

In addition to street maintenance, the Village maintains signs and street lights. If you notice a street light that is out of order or a sign in disrepair, contact the Village.

Sidewalk Snow Removal

Village of Melrose Ordinance 11.60 (3) (b) requires owners or occupants of residential properties located within the Village of Melrose to “remove snow and ice from sidewalks within 24 hours of the cessation of any snowfall…”

In the event that owners/occupants do not comply within 24 hours of receipt of a complaint notice, the Village Board shall cause the removal of the snow and ice from said sidewalk and assess a special tax pursuant to Sec. 66.615, Stats.

Alternate Side Parking

Alternate Side Street Parking begins each year on December 1st and ends on March 31st.

  • Even Numbered Days: Park beginning at 1am on the east and south sides of streets.
  • Odd Numbered Days: Park beginning at 1am on the west and north sides of streets.

Sewer

Sewer Infrastructure

The Melrose Sewer Department maintains nearly 3 ½ miles of gravity fed sewer lines that run to a single lift station located Southeast of Mill Street. There is an additional 1 ½ miles worth of force main travelling from the lift station to the sewage treatment plant located South of Highway 54.

Treatment Plant

Treatment Plant Lagoons

The Treatment Plant fills two sewage lagoons equipped with blowers to supply adequate airflow. From May 1st through September 30th discharge from the lagoons are chlorinated to kill fecal bacteria in order to protect recreation on the Black River.

The lagoon system was built in 1983 with a 20-year life expectancy. The Village is currently taking steps to modernize the system and remove sludge from the lagoons.

Water

Water Department

The Melrose Water Department maintains nearly 3 ½ miles of water mains. In 2009, the Village added a state-of-the-art water treatment system including an iron removal system, two new wells/well houses and a new water tower.

For fire protection purposes, the Department maintains 42 fire hydrants within and on the outskirts of the Village.
